Adult Eyelid Drooping

It can be observed in adults over 40. It's generally associated with variables that occur with aging. As the eye muscles relax or muscle function decreases, the eyelids lose strength and become flaccid. This can occur in one eyelid or both.

Childhood Eyelid Drooping (Congenital Ptosis)

It is a condition where the child's eyelid is lower than the other when he or she is born.

There are several reasons why eyelids droop:

  • Functional retardation of the eyelid-lifting muscle, damage to the nerves controlling the eyelid-lifting muscle
  • Weakness of the skin of the upper eyelids
  • Certain diseases or disorders can also cause drooping eyelids.
  • Tumors around or behind the eyes
  • Drooping eyelids may occur due to diabetes, Horner Syndrome, Myasthenia gravis or stroke.
  • Eyelid inflammation, such as a stye, can also cause eyelid drooping.
Eyelid Drooping / Ptosis Symptoms

Ptosis symptoms presents itself visually.

Drooping eyelid on one side  The difference between the two eyelid levels is clearly noticeable. This difference is usually noticeable to everyone. However, sometimes the difference can be so minimal that it's barely noticeable.

Difference between cover levels unilateral eyelid drooping  is considered easy to understand.

However, if both eyelids are drooping, it is more difficult for the person to understand the situation and seek medical support for the disease.

Double-sided valve droop In patients with this condition, this condition usually manifests itself with certain complaints. These are;

  • Development of vision and vision problems in children due to closure of the visual angle,
  • Decreased angle of view
  • Feeling of pain and numbness
  • Fatigue and tired appearance
  • In children, they try to look and see by tilting their heads back to see from under their eyelids.
  • Drooping eyelids that partially or completely cover the pupil can often lead to amblyopia (lazy eye).

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ptosis

The treatment is surgery.

During the ophthalmologist examination, the surgical plan is planned based on the individual's needs, including muscle function, eyelid physiology, and other factors.

The goal of surgery is to raise the eyelid level sufficiently.

  • It is one of the surgical options that involves a skin incision over the eyelid.
  •  There is also a surgical alternative that can be performed internally, under the eyelid (conjunctiva), if the person's eyelid physiology and muscle functions are suitable.
  • Sometimes, surgery may also include removal of excess skin from the upper eyelid, or it may be performed in addition to surgery.

Surgery is usually performed with local anesthesia. The local anesthetic is injected into the skin. Sedation is also possible during surgery. There may be some eyelid swelling in the first month after surgery, but this is most noticeable in the first week, after which the swelling subsides.

Although there is no obstacle to returning to work for employed people, it is recommended that you rest and do any physical exercise for the first week to avoid the strenuous effects of surgery, eyelid bruising, edema or scarring.

The postoperative results become almost clear as the eyelid swelling and bruising usually regress in the first few weeks.
